Keeping it Cool

  • My computer puts out a lot of heat.
  • I live in the deep south (of Canada)
  • I often need to close my office door for meetings.
  • Therefore – it can get pretty warm in here in the summer.

I’ve decided to put that heat somewhere else. I found a cabinet at the ReStore for $20, some legs for it online, and an inline duct fan. A bit of work with a hole saw, and I’ve got an enclosure that ducts the warm air from my computer into my basement.

Here’s the cabinet before

And after having some ventilation holes drilled

Air will come up the first chamber, across, and down the second.

hooked up to the old dryer duct

Ran that to an inline duct fan in the basement. Will need to secure that next.

And here’s the machine in place – need some cable management, and at least one longer displayport cable so I can use my desk in stand-mode.
